Greenhouse Gas Acreage Release 2026 – Call for Nominations
The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) invites industry stakeholders to nominate areas for consideration as part of Western Australia’s first greenhouse gas (GHG) acreage release.
The approved manner for nominating an area for release is via a dedicated departmental mailbox acreagerelease@dmpe.wa.gov.au. If a nominated area is released, there will be a general expectation for the nominee to submit a bid for that nominated area.
The nomination period for the first GHG acreage release will close on 20 June 2026. Late nominations will not be considered in this release.
Industry nominations will be assessed by DMPE in consideration for future acreage release, although the nomination of an area does not guarantee its inclusion in the release. However, DMPE will consider such factors as:
- level of industry interest in exploring the area;
- previous interest and exploration in the nominated area;
- conservation estates and other environmental considerations;
- Native Title considerations;
- new data or geologic knowledge affecting the area’s suitability to inject and store GHG substances.
To formally indicate an expression of interest in a discrete area of Western Australia for GHG injection and storage, a nomination should include:
- a covering letter in support of the nomination for expression of interest
- a map, including the graticular block numbers, depicting the area of interest; and
- a report on the subject area.
